The Pilot Bearing & Seal should be replaced at every opportunity (i.e. every time you do the clutch or pull the engine). It is tricky to remove and we highly recommend the 3-jaw factory pilot bearing removal tool. Aftermarket clutch kits sometimes provide a pilot bearing but overlook the seal. This is a major mistake. The seal prevents abrasive clutch disc material from getting into the bearing and wearing it out prematurely. A failed pilot bearing can destroy the end of the eccentric shaft, typically requiring a full-rebuild to replace. We do now have a tool for machining the pilot bearing bore in the car, allowing the use of an oversized replacement bearing, so keep that in mind if you find a lot of carnage in the pilot bearing bore.
